Brewster's appointment was confirmed on Monday as the 40-year-old was paraded by the bottom-of-the-table club 10 months after being sacked by Dundee United.
Brewster said: "It's just a case of making sure the guys keep believing they are good players and a good team. It's about getting back to basics and doing what they are good at, which is working together."
He added: "There have been strong foundations at this club for a long time as the basis for success and we will look to keep improving.
"I'm up for the challenge and I hope the players are too.
"There is not too much wrong in terms of the squad, but I think we're short of defenders and that's an area I will be looking at immediately."
