Brier makes the right impression

Austrian Markus Brier made an immediate impact in his first US PGA Championship.

The China Open winner was tied for the lead after 14 holes at Southern Hills with American Arron Oberholser - on four under par.

Brier started on the 10th hole and played his first nine in 32 to make the turn at three under.

A birdie at 10 got him off to a good start and he added two more on the front nine, at 13 and 17.

He added a birdie at number three and had yet to mar his card with a bogey.

Rich Beem, John Daly and PGA Club Professional Brad Lardon were tied for second at three under, with Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Corey Pavin another shot back.

Woods was finding fairways and making birdies - worrying for the rest of the field - before dropping a shot with a bogey at 18.

Among the early starters, Woods was three under par through six holes to grab a share of the lead.
