Britain defeated by Poland

Great Britain missed the chance to claim a place in April's World Group II play-offs after suffering a 2-1 Fed Cup defeat to Poland in Tallinn on Saturday.

Nigel Sears' side had come through their round-robin group in the Europe/Africa Group I section of the competition without dropping a rubber but came up short despite taking a 1-0 lead.

That came courtesy of Elena Baltacha's 6-4 6-1 victory over Katarzyna Piter, but in the battle of the big guns Poland's world number nine Agnieszka Radwanska overcame British number one Anne Keothavong - ranked 54th in the world - 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4).

That meant the doubles clash between Sarah Borwell and Keothavong and Klaudia Jans and Alicia Rosolska would be decisive, and the Polish pair emerged victorious 7-5 6-3.
