Britain finish with five medals

James Goddard and Lizzie Simmonds both claimed bronze medals in the final session of the European Short-Course Championships to bring Great Britain's medal tally to five at the end of the four-day meet in Croatia.

Goddard held on to take third in the 100 metres individual medley to add to his title in the 200m IM while Simmonds - who has set five British records during the competition - was third in the 200m backstroke.

Hannah Lowe and James Gibson also claimed bronze medals in the 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke respectively in Rijeka while nine British records were set.

A total of nine world records - four to France's Amaury Leveaux alone - and 32 European marks were set, meaning 105 world marks had been set so far in 2008.

The regularity of these records since the advent of technological advances in swimsuit design has prompted 15 of the 17 top European nations - including Great Britain - to present a petition to FINA, the world governing body, calling for a number of regulations to be implemented.

There were a number of highly-encouraging performances from younger members of the British team, some of whom were competing in their first senior international.

Georgia Davies produced personal bests in all her races with the 18-year-old finishing sixth in the 200m backstroke final. Another backstroker, former European Junior champion Marco Loughran, also thrived, reaching two finals.

Goddard claimed his second medal of the meet when he held on to third in the 100m IM by 0.02secs to lower his best to 52.36 as Peter Mankoc won his ninth consecutive European title in the event in a European record.

Kris Gilchrist was just outside the medals in the 200m breaststroke which saw France's Hugues Duboscq set a new European record, while Hannah Miley came fourth in the 400m individual medley as Mireia Belmonte Garcia set a new world record of 4:25.06.
