Brits amongst the medals as records fall

Great Britain won two silvers and one bronze medal as three world records fell in the first session of the World Short-Course Championships in Manchester.

Hannah Miley went inside the old world record in the 400metres individual medley but was still second as triple Olympic medalist Kirsty Coventry set a new world best.

The women's 4x200m relay squad took almost eight seconds off the old world record but were still runners-up as the Netherlands held off Rebecca Adlington's surge.

And Jess Dickons partially atoned for her failure to make the GB Olympic team when she claimed the bronze in the 200m butterfly, Britain's first medal at the MEN Arena.

Miley set her second European record in the space of five days in the 400m medley when she touched in four minutes 27.27 seconds, inside Yana Klochkova's old world record, but Coventry set a new mark of 4mins 26.52secs.

The 18-year-old also lowered the long-course mark - also previously held by Klochkova - at the Olympic trials last Saturday.

Miley said: "You can't wipe the smile off my face.

"I am honoured to have been in the same final as Kirsty and to go under the old world record is phenomenal.

"The crowd is phenomenal. I could hear them on the breaststroke leg - it was silent (when submerged), loud, silent, loud.

"It is a huge boost."
