Broad brace lifts England

Stuart Broad's double strike before lunch provided England with hope of clawing their way back into the first Test at Sabina Park.

Broad accounted for Chris Gayle, one of West Indies' two centurions, and Xavier Marshall in the penultimate over before lunch following a torrid struggle for breakthroughs.

West Indies took lunch on 224 for three, moments after Ramnaresh Sarwan reacted to his own hundred with a Usain Bolt-style celebration.

West Indies captain Gayle gave a morning of sedate pace some impetus by crashing his way from 86 to a ninth Test hundred in just three balls.

Two consecutive straight sixes off left-arm spinner Monty Panesar had the crowd on their feet in anticipation of three figures.

Gayle did not disappoint, cleverly sweeping the next delivery for three and celebrating a first Test century in his Jamaican homeland, but he perished when a static prod at a Broad delivery re-directed the ball into off-stump to end a 202-run stand for the second wicket.

The out-of-sorts Marshall survived a confident leg-before appeal first ball but was not so lucky second time around as Tony Hill raised his finger skywards.

For once, Hill's decision was not challenged in a match dominated by the use of technology. England were again denied a wicket prior to a frantic last 20 minutes before lunch.

Andrew Flintoff believed he had left-hander Gayle caught down the leg-side midway through the morning session but, although New Zealand official Hill initially agreed, the decision was overturned.

Television replays showed that the ball had brushed Gayle's trousers rather than the edge of his bat and he was subsequently reprieved after information provided by third official Daryl Harper.
