Broad inspires England fightback
Related Articles
21 January 2009
Broad interrupted an opening stand of 73, nipped Australia captain Ricky Ponting out cheaply and then Michael Hussey for a duck.
Michael Clarke followed soon after, brilliantly caught by Jonathan Trott, leaving the tourists 93 for four in reply to England's 332 all out.
England's search for a first wicket was becoming a desperate affair when Andrew Strauss decided it was time to give his fourth seamer a chance, in place of Graeme Swann at the Vauxhall end.
But it quickly proved to be the right move, Broad winning an lbw verdict against Shane Watson in his first over and then bringing one back off the seam to have Ponting playing on in his third.
In his next, he made short work of Hussey - stuck on the crease in defence for another lbw departure.
The in-form Clarke had made just three when he attempted to drive on the up and debutant Trott held a superb low catch.
