Broad strikes early

Stuart Broad justified England's decision to recall him for the final Test by claiming the crucial wicket of dangerous opener Virender Sehwag with just his sixth delivery as the tourists made an early breakthrough in the second Test against India in Mohali.

The Nottinghamshire seamer, who missed the opening Test defeat in Chennai while he continued his recovery from a hamstring strain, was brought back into England's line-up as they attempted to level the series with a victory.

Broad was recalled as a replacement for Steve Harmison, whose below-par display in the previous defeat prompted England to drop him only two Tests after he regained his place in the side.

The decision was vindicated in the second over of the match as Broad seamed the ball away from Sehwag, man-of-the-match in Chennai, and induced an edge behind to give England a flying start as India struggled to 13 for one after nine overs.

The match had been delayed by 20 minutes for bad light and when play did get under way, India captain MS Dhoni decided to bat first after winning the toss.

Gautam Gambhir looked to provide India with some early impetus by driving the second ball of the match from James Anderson through the covers for four.

Broad immediately proved more dangerous from the other end, beating Sehwag's outside edge before striking with the last ball of his first over to give the tourists an early lift.

His demise brought former captain Rahul Dravid to the crease, who is under pressure for his place after scoring just two half centuries in his last 18 Test innings.

India had considered dropping him down the order to number five but instead kept faith and Dravid responded with a cautious start to his innings before getting off the mark with a deflected single down to fine leg off Broad.
