Broad strikes for Notts

England star Stuart Broad wreaked havoc on the Worcestershire batsmen at Trent Bridge as Nottinghamshire took charge of their LV County Championship Division One clash.

Making his first appearance of the domestic season, the bowler collected four for 35 as the Pears were reduced to 140 for four in pursuit of the hosts' 504.

Adding to his burgeoning reputation as a genuine all-rounder, Broad had earlier struck 60 in a massive total which also included 125 for ex-England wicketkeeper Chris Read. Vikram Solanki hit 50 before falling to Broad as Worcestershire limped to the close on day two.

It was also a productive day for Broad's international team-mate James Anderson, whose six for 56 was key to Lancashire limiting Sussex to 289 all out at Hove.

Anderson, with three wickets from Tuesday, removed Ed Joyce (90), Tom Smith (10) and Robin Martin-Jenkins (67) to boost head coach Peter Moores on his return to his former county.

The Red Rose made a dreadful start to their reply however and were two for two as Corey Collymore claimed the wickets of Tom Smith (second-ball duck) and Paul Horton for one, but Ashwell Prince (56), Mark Chilton (72 not out) and Steven Croft (59no) re-established their advantage as they closed on 209 for four.

In the top-flight games starting on Wednesday, county champions Durham reached 303 for seven thanks largely to Ian Blackwell's 95 and 62 from wicketkeeper Phil Mustard.

At Edgbaston, Warwickshire's Andrew Miller claimed three for 70 in Hampshire's 310 for seven, in which Michael Carberry amassed 77 and Nic Pothas an unbeaten 83.
