Broad strikes to give England hope

Stuart Broad claimed a crucial breakthrough shortly before lunch to lift England's hopes of forcing victory in the third Ashes Test after encountering stubborn resistance from Australia on the final day at Edgbaston.

The Nottinghamshire seamer has suffered a frustrating Test with the ball and was not called upon until the 51st over of the innings as Australia battled to save the match.

But Broad ended his frustration with the key wicket of Michael Hussey, who had battled for over two and a half hours for his 64, just four overs before lunch as Australia progressed into a 59-run lead on 172 for four with a minimum 69 overs remaining in the day.

Resuming the final morning trailing by 25 runs on 88 for two, Australia looked to have won the session following a determined 90-run stand between Hussey and makeshift opener Shane Watson.

But James Anderson, a five-wicket hero during the first innings, was introduced from the Pavilion End after Andrew Flintoff had bowled a seven-over spell and finally earned the breakthrough with his sixth ball.

Watson had progressed to 53 when he lined up Anderson for a cover drive off the front foot but ended up giving a thin edge behind to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

Hussey looked set to begin another formidable partnership with new batsman Michael Clarke but the former Northamptonshire batsman was dismissed by Broad, who tempted him into pushing outside off-stump and edging behind.
