Broad wants early breakthrough

England are desperate for early wickets this afternoon in what will be their last fling to keep hopes of victory over West Indies at Queen's Park Oval alive.

West Indies, 1-0 up after the tourists' capitulation in Jamaica last month, resume on 349 for four, a deficit of 197 runs - but England are clinging to the hope a couple of early wickets and deterioration in the surface will aid their quest to level things.

"If we can knock them over and get a lead, they will have to bat last on it and I can't see the cracks staying as true as they have done on the fifth day," said fast bowler Stuart Broad.

Broad, who gave England early hope with the removal of nightwatchman Daren Powell, has slammed the pitches served up since the home team took a surprise lead in the campaign.

"The wickets have been terrible, to be honest," he added.

"Throughout the series it has not been a fair battle between bat and ball.

"I remember watching great Mike Atherton and Allan Donald battles as a youngster, but you don't get fair battles on wickets like that.

"But that's what we are dealt with and it's probably our fault for getting rolled in Jamaica."
