Bronze for Sotherton

Kelly Sotherton has claimed Great Britain's first medal at the World Championships in Osaka after winning bronze in the heptathlon.

The 30-year-old posted a season's best total score of 6,510 points to edge out team-mate Jessica Ennis by 41 after recording lifetime bests in the long jump, 100metres hurdles and 200m, while also posting a season's best in the javelin.

Defending champion Carolina Kluft claimed a third consecutive world crown ahead of Lyudmila Blonska.

Sotherton headed into the final event in fourth place overall, trailing Austra Skujyte by 37 points and needing a winning margin of 2.5 seconds, but always looked comfortable and finished second behind Ennis in 2mins 11.39secs, with the Lithuanian finishing a distant last.

The Commonwealth Games champion had earlier edged into third place with a 6.68m long jump, but slipped down to fourth heading into the 800m after managing just 31.90m in the javelin.

Ennis, leader after setting a personal best in the hurdles, missed out on a medal after dropping valuable points in the shot putt and javelin.

Afterwards, Sotherton revealed her disdain for Blonska after she finished behind the Ukrainian, who has returned to the sport following a failed drugs test.

Blonska was handed a two-year ban in June 2003 after testing positive for anabolic steroids, and Sotherton said: "I think you can see by the reactions from the other athletes that we are not interested when she is there."
