Brown on the attack

Hull manager Phil Brown admits his side lack a cutting edge ahead of their Barclays Premier League debut after falling to a 1-0 friendly defeat to Hearts on Sunday.

City have scored once in their last three pre-season games, with only Osasuna to play before their first top-flight appearance against Fulham on August 16.

"The final third is a little bit of a problem, we have only threatened from long-range free-kicks and follow-ups," Brown said.

Hull only threatened their Scottish opponents from two long-range free-kicks from Geovanni, who played off Caleb Folan in the first half and Dean Windass after the break.

The Tigers boss is still looking to add to his squad but he is confident some training-ground work and confidence-building can improve their goal threat.

Brown added: "We lacked punch. We had that problem in the first 10 or 12 games last season. You address it by working on drills in training and building confidence.

"But we are getting the six or seven new players drilled into what playing for this club is all about."

Brown watched upcoming opponents Fulham draw 1-1 with Birmingham on Saturday and was impressed by their forward play, with new signing Bobby Zamora set to be joined by Andy Johnson this week.

"I saw Fulham at Birmingham and they are blending together as a team," Brown added. "They are probably, in their pre-season, a little bit ahead of us. They look to have a bit more of a cutting edge.

"I'm still in the hunt for a couple of players. If we get them in before the start all well and good, but I'm pretty much happy to start with what we have got."
