Brown settles for winning ugly

Nathan Brown hailed his Huddersfield side's battling qualities after the Giants held off a late Harlequins rally to emerge with a vital 32-16 victory at The Stoop.

The visitors looked home and dry as they held a 20-6 lead with just five minutes remaining in the capital but Chris Melling hauled the hosts to within a score with two tries, only for man of the match Brett Hodgson to cross for two of his own in the dying seconds.

"I honestly thought we were pretty average out there," said Brown. "We found a way to win and that shows we are becoming a good team - not a great team, but a good one."

He added: "I actually thought we lost the forward battle and at 20-6 they really ripped into us, but we stuck at it and got the win.

"We had far too many soft periods in the game for my liking, and we gave away too many penalties in those periods, but it says a lot for us as a side that we are talking like this after a win."

The Giants held the advantage at half-time after scores from Leroy Cudjoe and David Hodgson cancelled out an early Luke Gale try.

But after the break Huddersfield strangled the life out of the hosts, Michael Lawrence crossing for a further score and Hodgson booting a penalty.

The visitors looked comfortable until the frantic final five minutes which saw four tries scored in a breathless period.

Despite seeing his side close to within four points at one stage, Harlequins coach Brian McDermott was not impressed.

He said: "I thought we were absolutely terrible. "As an attacking force we were a bit of a joke and even after putting ourselves in a position to win the game we came up with a load of rubbish."
