The 16-year-old from Cumbrian club Wath Brow Hornets has signed a three-year contract at the Grattan Stadium and is expected to be thrust straight into full-time training.
"James has been one of the most sought-after players in the whole country," Bulls coach Steve McNamara told the Bradford Telegraph & Argus. "He's been chased very hard by Wigan, Leeds and ourselves."
He added: "He is probably currently rated the best player in his age group and is a really exciting prospect. He's a big, strong, skilful forward who can play prop, second row or loose forward."
Donaldson, who will move from the Whitehaven area to Bradford, said: "It's a great opportunity for me. I've wanted to become a Super League player ever since I was six years old.
"Not many lads up here get spotted to play for Super League clubs and I'm so proud to be signing for Bradford Bulls."
