Burns, 51, will begin receiving treatment after cancer returned, Celtic have confirmed.
The former Kilmarnock, Reading and Celtic manager was first diagnosed as suffering from a melanoma two years ago after a scan.
He received surgery to remove two lumps from his leg in May 2006, before returning to the Celtic dug-out.
Celtic confirmed Burns "intends to continue in his role as first-team coach and head of the youth academy" while he is treated.
Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith offered his support to the former Scotland assistant manager.
Smith told the Scottish Sun: "I'm so sorry to hear about Tommy's illness - I have always had a lot of time for him.
"I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can get over this again."
