Butt backs Shearer for escape

Nicky Butt is confident Alan Shearer's arrival as Newcastle manager will stave off the disaster of relegation from the Premier League.

Newcastle remain in the bottom three following Chelsea's 2-0 victory at St James' Park on Saturday - Shearer's first game in charge - but Butt insists that will change.

Butt told the club's official website: "He's been very upbeat and the whole town is on a high. Hopefully now he can help get us out of the trouble we're in and I'm confident that together we can do that."

He added: "Alan is one of those men who has charisma and an aura about him.

"He demands respect and he gets that the minute he walks in the changing room.

"The players are happy he's here and it's been an enjoyable start."

Butt believes there were positives to take from the Chelsea game and that the Magpies were unlucky not to take at least a point from the match.

He said: "We took the game to Chelsea, worked hard and snuffed out what they had to offer.

"But there are plenty of positives to work on because for an hour I thought we competed very well against one of the best sides in Europe."
