Button and Barrichello drop five places

Brawn GP duo Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello have both been penalised five grid places for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix after failing to slow down for a yellow flag during qualifying at Suzuka, the FIA have confirmed.

The news will come as a blow to Button, who leads the Formula One championship and would clinch the drivers' title if he beats Brazilian team-mate Barrichello by five points.

Button will now drop to 12th on the grid, with Barrichello in 10th after both were adjudged to have failed to reduce speed at the yellow flag signal, which was raised after debris from Sebastien Buemi's car was left on the track.

Buemi crashed coming out of turn 14 during the second qualifying period and scraped his car along the barrier on the long straight up to 130R, leaving the front wing of his Toro Rosso and other debris in the middle of the track.

Both Button and Barrichello, along with Fernando Alonso and Adrian Sutil, were forced to take evasive action but all four were handed a five-place grid penalty.

Buemi received the same punishment along with a reprimand for impeding the quartet due to careless driving.

Button is now highly unlikely to clinch the drivers' title on Sunday, while Brawn GP will probably now have to wait until Brazil to clinch the constructors' crown.

It is, however, a welcome bonus for pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel, who is 25 points behind the Englishman with three races to go. Sutil, meanwhile, will now start ninth in his Force India, Buemi 15th and Renault driver Alonso 17th.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Jarno Trulli (second), Lewis Hamilton (third), Nick Heidfeld (fourth), Kimi Raikkonen (fifth), Heikki Kovalainen (sixth), Nico Rosberg (seventh) and Robert Kubica (eighth).
