Cahill set for surgery

Everton's injury-prone midfielder Tim Cahill is due to undergo a critical operation in Australia that the club hope will put a full stop to his fitness problems.

Cahill suffered a recurrence of a metatarsal injury last month against West Ham and was ruled out for the season. Now Cahill is in his native Australia to see a top specialist and have further surgery, probably in the next fortnight.

"I hope to be back for pre-season, ready for Everton's first game of the campaign," he told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

He continued: "It is going to be hard work but nothing is going to stop me coming back. The aim is to fix the problem for good.

"I've missed a lot of football and I'm determined to do whatever it takes to prevent another recurrence.

"My aim is to be back fitter and stronger for next season, and I have no doubt I'll achieve that.

"I've missed a lot of football in recent times and it's frustrating. But I know I'll get back to where I want to be."

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta could be back to aid Everton's increasingly desperate bid to cling onto a UEFA Cup qualification place.

The Basque midfielder has been struggling with groin and stomach problems and has been back home in Spain receiving intensive treatment.

But now the signs are he could be in contention for a return in the must-win home clash with Aston Villa on Sunday - with the Birmingham side able to leapfrog Everton into fifth spot if they win at Goodison Park.
