Caldwell knows dangers of Celtic style

Celtic defender Gary Caldwell is an adherent of Tony Mowbray's attacking philosophy but he has first-hand knowledge of it coming unstuck in Europe.

The Hoops go into the second leg of their Champions League third qualifier against Dinamo Moscow on Wednesday night at the Stadium Arena Khimki trailing 1-0 and with the Celtic boss insisting his side will be going for goals.

Four years ago Caldwell was in Mowbray's Hibernian side that were hammered 5-1 in the UEFA Cup first round by Dnipro in Ukraine following a goalless draw in Leith and the defender said: "The gaffer did what any manager would do against Dnipro when we were losing and had a go. It left us exposed and we got done twice in the last 10 minutes on the break."

He added: "You come away with a 5-1 mauling and there wasn't that in the game. But you would rather have a go and then you can say that you tried."

Caldwell added: "We play an open and expansive game and, whenever you do that, it leaves you vulnerable.

"When we are so open, we need to keep the ball well and be conscious that every touch and every pass has to be crisp.

"Any slackness will be punished, but I enjoy this style. It's great creating chances and scoring goals. That is why you play.

"But as a defender there are times when I have to shout and tell people on the park that we can't be so open.

"It's about getting the balance right and, if we do, it'll be great.

"If we don't, we will be vulnerable and will lose goals."
