Caldwell wants chapter closed on duo

Gary Caldwell hopes the controversy surrounding axed Scotland team mates Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor will not "run and run and run".

Rangers duo Ferguson and McGregor were dramatically dropped to the bench for Wednesday night's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Iceland after it emerged a drinking session at their Loch Lomond base at the weekend got out of hand.

Caldwell said: "I think people blow things out of proportion and make a massive story out of nothing."

The questionable behaviour of the two players, and manager George Burley's controversial decision to keep them both with the squad after they apologised, was set aside for 90 minutes as goals from Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher took Scotland in to second place in Group Nine and on course for a play-off place.

While Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith met Burley on Thursday for a "review" of the incident, which promises to provide more questions than answers, Caldwell told PA Sport the incident had no effect on the build-up to the Iceland game and should be forgotten.

"I don't think it did affect preparations," added the Celtic defender.

"As players, you just get on with things. The manager dealt with things and we get on with it.

"We had a job to do and we've done it well.

"We would rather focus on that because we know what it's like in this country; we can make it run and run and run and it really shouldn't."

Asked if both players still have an international future, Caldwell continued: "Definitely, but again that's the manager's decision. I don't pick the team, he picks the team, so you would have to ask him."
