Calzaghe to add super-fight to gong

Joe Calzaghe will celebrate his crowning as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year by signing for a career-defining super-fight against the former middleweight great Bernard Hopkins.

Calzaghe was in Las Vegas to watch Ricky Hatton's unsuccessful attempt to dethrone Floyd Mayweather while representatives of both parties worked hard behind the scenes to make the fight happen.

And at Hatton's post-fight press conference at the MGM Grand on Saturday night, Richard Schaeffer, the chief executive of Hopkins' promoters Golden Boy, said: "I had some meetings with his promoters here and talks are progressing nicely. I hope by the year end we can get this fight done."

He added: "Both fighters have agreed to a 50-50 split so I hope that Frank Warren can live with that as well."

Warren confirmed that initial negotiations had gone well and said he hoped to secure the deal for Calzaghe's own super-fight some time early in the new year. Calzaghe and Hopkins met head to head for the first time in the big fight media centre on Friday morning, when both fighters angrily accused the other of trying to duck the contest.

Calzaghe's visit also proved invaluable in terms of raising his profile amongst a US media who have warmed to him since his stunning win over Mikkel Kessler in Cardiff last month.

Calzaghe said: "I still don't think he wants the fight but I've only got two fights left and I want to move up to light-heavyweight and set new goals for myself. I have come over here and shown my face and said I am willing to fight Hopkins in America. Hopefully meeting Hopkins face to face and having a bit of a rumble will make it happen."

The 42-year-old Hopkins is a shadow of the fighter who reigned supreme at middleweight for 10 years but is still regarded as the 175lbs number one due to a win over Antonio Tarver in June last year.

Hopkins has spoken of his desire to fight Calzaghe at a major open-air venue, possibly New York's Yankee Stadium, in July but that suggestion was rubbished by veteran rival promoter Bob Arum.

Arum said: "Hopkins is taking about fighting at Yankee Stadium but that's rubbish. If he fought at Yankee Stadium even the ushers wouldn't want to watch him. Bernard Hopkins couldn't draw breath. It would be madness for that fight not to take place in Wales."
