Campbell avoids operation

Portsmouth have decided Sol Campbell will not need an operation on his torn Achilles tendon during the close season.

Campbell missed four of the last six matches of the season and manager Harry Redknapp feared he would need surgery - even though the former England defender, 32, was thought to prefer rest as an alternative healing measure.

Pompey physio Gary Sadler said: "Sol doesn't need surgery. The injury was feeling better towards the end of the season and he was able to do some gym work. He will have his own fitness programme during the summer and we will also give the Achilles plenty of rest."

It looks like more good news for Pompey after reports that they are closing in on a double coup, with top-scorer Nwankwo Kanu set to sign a new contract and Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari ready to seal a £6million move from Italian side Udinese.

Nigerian Kanu, who notched 12 goals last season after a free transfer switch from West Brom, is expected to announce on Sunday that he has signed a new two-year deal.

And Pompey manager Harry Redknapp is close to ending his year-long pursuit of Muntari after the player's agent Stefano Antonelli revealed they are close to a deal.

He told the Portsmouth News: "They are very near the right price. It will soon be just down to personal terms."

Former Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal striker Kanu, who turns 31 in August, has already revealed his intention to stay at Fratton Park after an ongoing saga which began in January.

"I will be here next season," he said.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News, Kanu's adviser and legal counsel Samuel Okoronkwo, added: "Relations between the two parties recently have been much warmer. Negotiations are in the final stages."
