Campbell double stuns Tykes

Campbell ignited the Yorkshire derby with an effective combination of technique and pace which yielded early first-half goals on a bitterly cold evening in East Yorkshire.

Barnsley were unbeaten in seven games and had the chance to move up to third in the Coca-Cola Championship with victory at the KC Stadium.

But their claims to be serious play-off challengers must be questioned on the evidence of this display by Simon Davey's side.

Campbell may have been the driving force, but Phil Brown's men were superior in every department - even with Jay-Jay Okocha and Henrik Pedersen sidelined through injury - and deserved a third when Dean Marney sidefooted home late on.

And with Hull's new starlet from Old Trafford in the ranks until January, their supporters can expect a shift in fortunes in what has so far been a frustrating campaign. Any notion Hull were there for the taking on the back of six games without a win was soon dispelled, however, when Campbell opened the scoring after seven minutes.

Veteran Dean Windass collected the ball deep inside Barnsley's half and threaded a cross-field pass around the back of the defence. Campbell showed laudable precision to put the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

The 20-year-old forward had already won over his new fans but better was to come 11 minutes later. Having initially fended off intense pressure to win a loose ball, Campbell raced onto David Livermore's deflected pass inside Barnsley's 18-yard box.

Hull's new striker then showed excellent dexterity to pull clear of two defenders, forcing the ball past Heinz Muller. Hull adopted a deeper stance as the second half progressed but their opponents were often lethargic.

Michael Turner missed a 73rd-minute sitter after good work from Garcia, but Barnsley were a beaten team long before Marney poked a third through Muller's legs in injury-time.
