Capello 'fascinated' by England post

Fabio Capello claims he would be fascinated by the chance to revive the ailing fortunes of the England national team.

Capello, who parted company with Real Madrid in the summer, was quick to signal that he would be interested in replacing the sacked Steve McClaren at the helm of England, who failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

The 61-year-old told national broadcaster Rai 2: "It would be a very interesting challenge and difficult challenges have always fascinated me."

Capello, reacting to reports that former Porto and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has ruled himself out of contention, continued: "I was convinced that Mourinho would have accepted. But the fact that he has opted to step aside means that he has another aim. But I am older than Mourinho."

Capello, who was sacked by Real despite leading them to the Primera Liga title, has previously indicated that he would relish the chance to coach a national side after a glittering club career with AC Milan, Real, Roma and Juventus.
