Captains keep India in control

India captains past and present combined to pressurise England's total of 281 for eight in the third NatWest Series contest at Edgbaston.

Both Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly struck half-centuries to keep the tourists in with a chance of taking the lead in the seven-match campaign.

Without all-rounder Andrew Flintoff - not risked due to an injured right knee - England lacked penetration with the ball in the middle overs and India's third-wicket alliance took their side to 134 for two with 21 overs remaining.

Dravid, who spanked an unbeaten 92 in levelling things at 1-1 in the Bristol day-nighter on Friday, set the faster pace by reaching fifty first, off only 51 deliveries.

Moments later Ganguly joined him in celebrating yet another batting landmark, when his 82-ball effort was recognised by a raucous crowd.

India kept the required rate manageable despite the loss of Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik in consecutive overs.

Dravid's response to the requirement reaching seven runs per over was to haul Paul Collingwood's medium pace over midwicket for six.

Ganguly then lofted another maximum straight down the ground off left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, who was Flintoff's direct replacement in the XI.

England's total was boosted by Ian Bell's third consecutive top score for his country - this time making 79 to restructure the innings from 118 for three.
