Cardiff thrash Scunthorpe to open new stadium

Michael Chopra grabbed the first league goal at the new Cardiff City Stadium to help his side to a comfortable 4-0 win over promoted Scunthorpe.

Chopra, who has returned to south Wales following an unhappy spell with Sunderland, drilled home from 25 yards in the 19th minute.

Jay Bothroyd did double the home side's lead in the 31st minute, tapping home from close range after good work from Joe Ledley.

Chopra claimed Cardiff's third on the stroke of half-time with a great finish, finding the roof of the net from 12 yards. Peter Whittingham completed the humiliation with a stoppage-time penalty.

In the game which pitted the sons of two of the greatest managers the world of football has seen, Derby beat promoted Peterborough 2-1.

Miles Addison netted what was only his second career league goal in the fourth minute to give Nigel Clough - son of Forest legend Brian - the early advantage over Sir Alex Ferguson's son, Darren.

George Boyd's penalty six minutes from time appeared to have given Peterborough a share of the spoils but Gary Teale bagged the winner from close range.

Barnsley came from behind to draw 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Michael Gray scored one and set up the opener for Jermaine Johnson to give the hosts a comfortable half-time lead. But Jacob Butterfield bagged his first senior goal on the hour mark and Jonathan Macken levelled matters in the 76th minute.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway's return to Loftus Road was spoiled by a late QPR equaliser. Ben Burgess' 37th-minute left-footed strike from 12 yards looked to have given them victory but Peter Ramage snatched a deserved share of the spoils four minutes from time when his cross floated over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
