Carew plots the next step

Striker John Carew believes it is vital for Aston Villa to secure European football to help the wealth of young talent at the club to move on to the next level.

Carew has played in Europe consistently throughout his career and feels it is crucial for the likes of Ashley Young, relishing being given a free role by Martin O'Neill, and Gabriel Agbonlahor to show their skills on the continental stage for the first time.

He said: "It is important for development of young players to play in Europe, absolutely right, in terms of the experience and everything which can be gained from playing against top players from other countries."

He added: "I was lucky in that I played in the Champions League when I was only 19 and was part of a final only a year later and you learn so much from things like that.

"I have played in Europe for almost all of my career and it is just an amazing feeling. I want these young lads here at Aston Villa to experience that.

"People like Gabby (Agbonlahor) and Ashley (Young) are already exciting talents, great talents, and it will help to take them on to the next level."

The firepower of Agbonlahor, Young and Carew has put Villa in a position where a win over Everton on Sunday will fire them into a UEFA Cup spot, and Carew is pleased with his tally this season alongside his young striker partners.

He explained: "We are playing well together and creating space and chances for each other. I am really enjoying it.

"I've got 12 goals and I think the best I've managed in a season is 15 or 16. I will try and get my best tally.

"It is going well but the most important thing is that we win and who scores is not important. If I can have an assist, that gives me the same pleasure as scoring myself. I just want to see us winning."
