Carmont awarded improved deal

Wigan centre George Carmont has agreed an improved contract with the club for 2009, with the option of an extra year.

Carmont, who is to play for Samoa at the World Cup, was an ever present and a huge success in his first season at the JJB Stadium, scoring 14 tries in 33 games.

The 30-year-old's previous deal had an option for 2009 but Wigan's decision to offer an "amended" contract quashes speculation linking him with French rugby union clubs.

Chairman Ian Lenagan said: "George Carmont did an excellent job for Wigan in 2008 and enjoys both the club and the town.

"Whilst we already held an automatic contract extension into 2009 with George, it was only fair to reflect better George's value to the club and at the same time to secure an option for 2010."

Carmont joined Wigan from Newcastle Knights last winter and his impressive performances earned him the Warriors players' player of the year award and a place in the engage Super League Dream Team.
