Carrick shocked by treble bid

Michael Carrick never expected to be chasing a treble in his first season at Manchester United - but the midfielder is keen to do all he can for glory.

United enter the final month of the campaign with interest in the Barclays Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League.

Carrick, who joined in an £18.6million deal from Tottenham last summer, said: "I didn't think I would be in with a shout of three trophies in my first season. I didn't think at this stage we would be going as strong."

The combative midfielder added: "As soon as I arrived, I was thinking about challenging for things because that is what this club is all about.

"We are in such a good position, but it can be thrown away as quickly as we have earned it. We are well aware of that, which is why we are not getting carried away with things."

United take on Everton on Saturday and, aside from the trip to Chelsea on May 9, manager Sir Alex Ferguson knows the trip to Merseyside represents the toughest test of their four-match run-in.

Victory would go a long way towards ending a four-year title drought, so the only change anticipated is the introduction of Alan Smith, possibly for Darren Fletcher.

Such a move would leave Carrick to resume a central midfield partnership with Paul Scholes that has been so devastating for United this term.

Carrick added: "We have just got stronger and stronger as the season has gone on. Just playing with Paul teaches you a lot. He makes the game look very easy.

"It has just been a case of getting to know each other's play and the longer the season has gone on we have just settled more. The performances have shown that - in the last few weeks we have been really good - and hopefully that can continue."
