Carter hits maximum

Ali Carter created snooker history by firing a 147 break at the 888.com World Championship on Tuesday - the first time two maximums have been scored in the same tournament.

Just a day after Ronnie O'Sullivan recorded the seventh 147 in Crucible history, Carter followed suit in the 15th frame of his quarter-final with Peter Ebdon.

And even more amazingly, it came in the frame immediately after Ebdon had missed his own chance for a 147, missing the 15th black.

Carter will earn half of the £147,000 bonus for a maximum and the £10,000 for the highest break of the tournament - perhaps scuppering O'Sullivan's plans to buy a Bentley.

O'Sullivan had joked on Monday that he was worried about someone matching his feat and the 32-year-old must now be concerned about having to split the prize money three ways.

Carter looked in good shape to make the maximum from early on in the break, but still needed to pull out a superb pot on the final black with the white coming to rest near the side cushion.

The 28-year-old from Essex moved 8-7 ahead of Ebdon courtesy of the maximum and took the final frame of the evening for a two-frame cushion going into Wednesday's concluding session.

In the evening's other action Stephen Hendry and Ryan Day shared their eight frames to give Hendry an 11-5 lead after he dominated the opening session.

In the other quarter finals O'Sullivan and Liang Wenbo are locked at 4-4 as are Stephen Maguire and Joe Perry.
