Cato stars for brilliant Moore
07 January 2007
The champion jockey was the only one to come down the stands side of the course and it proved a masterstroke as he stole victory in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained five-year-old.
The horses were separated by the width of the track and it was Notnowcato (7-1) who got the verdict by a length and a half from Derby hero Authorized, the 4-7 favourite.
George Washington (4-1) was a head away in third.
Champery, acting as pacemaker for Authorized, quickly built up a long lead.
But he was virtually ignored by the rest of the field, which was headed by Notnowcato, Archipenko and Yellowstone - with Authorized and George Washington held up.
Moore chose to track over to the near side while Authorized, with his tongue sticking out, made his bid towards the centre after Yellowstone and Kandidate went on.
Peter Chapple-Hyam's Derby winner had to battle to get there, however, but managed to get his nose in front - only to be foiled by Notnowcato.
Last year's Eclipse runner-up kept on strongly to give Stoute his fifth Eclipse and Moore his first.
