Cavendish sets out goals

Mark Cavendish will wear the Tour de France's green jersey for the first time on Monday after becoming Britain's most successful road racer with his fifth victory in cycling's most prestigious race.

The 24-year-old from the Isle of Man then outlined his main targets for his third Tour de France - accumulating more stage wins and reaching Paris for the first time.

Cavendish, who surpassed Chris Boardman's record of 41 professional victories with his 14th win of the season, said: "I have two goals here. My personal goal is to finish the Tour, and my job, my second goal, is to win stages."

He added: "I don't think it's wise to go for the green jersey right from the start, so now I've won one stage I want to go all the way to Paris and see if I can win some more and maybe take a last win on the Champs Elysees."

If the Team Columbia-HTC rider reaches Paris for the first time on Sunday, July 26 the green jersey - worn by the leading rider in the points classification for results in intermediate and end-of-stage sprints - could be a by-product of those targets.

In 2007, Cavendish withdrew after eight stages before the race hit the high mountains - as is customary for a first-year professional - while in 2008 he dropped out after 14 stages - four of them resulting in victory - to focus on the Beijing Olympic Games.

Nothing will distract Cavendish from his goals in his third Tour de France and he labelled yesterday's victory on the 187-kilometre stage through Provence from Monaco to Brignoles as a "perfect" performance from his team.

"The team were superb, they're all great riders and I'm just glad I can win at the end of everything they do for me," he added.

"There were a lot of squads trying to get past us. They were all very keen to get a result, but we kept going and kept going and when we do that there's only ever going to be one result.

"I was able to go all out and get the win. It was perfect for us, and it's perfect to be able to do that after such hard work by my team-mates. It's a very special result and now I've got the green jersey, I couldn't be more satisfied."
