Cayless quits international game

World Cup-winning New Zealand captain Nathan Cayless has retired from international rugby league.

The 38-cap veteran made the announcement on Friday and said his last Test, the 34-20 World Cup final triumph over Australia at Suncorp Stadium, would be a massive highlight of his career.

"Nothing can compare with that," he said. "It was a fantastic campaign to be involved in and it was a huge honour to be able to lead the first New Zealand team to win the World Cup."

He added: "I've had a great time playing for the Kiwis over the last 10 years but I decided a while ago that it was time to move on from representative football."

Cayless will focus on his club, Parramatta, where the Sydney-born-and-raised Kiwi has played for 13 seasons and 215 games.

Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney, who played in Cayless' Test debut in Brisbane in 1998, said Cayless would always have a special place in New Zealand league history.

"Nathan is a tremendous leader and did an outstanding job as our captain at the World Cup last year," he said.

"He was a great team-mate to play alongside for New Zealand and, as a coach, I couldn't have asked more of him with the job he did for us last year."

New Zealand Rugby League chairman Ray Haffenden said the sight of Cayless holding the World Cup aloft in Brisbane would never be forgotten.

"That's certainly the greatest moment in our history and one of the best victories in New Zealand sporting history," he said
