Cech thought Terry had converted penalty

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was momentarily convinced Chelsea had become European champions before realising the full horror of captain John Terry's penalty miss.

Chelsea were on the brink of their first Champions League title when Terry stepped-up to take his spot-kick in a dramatic shoot-out against Manchester United in Moscow. Terry slipped as he took his penalty and the ball went agonisingly wide with Edwin van der Sar diving in the opposite direction.

"When I saw the goalkeeper going the other way, from my position I thought I saw the ball going in," Cech said.

"Then it was out but these can happen. It showed the story of the game really. We hit the post twice and in the last moment, when the goalkeeper dived the opposite way, John Terry slipped. It would have been in if he hadn't."

Cech admitted it was the biggest disappointment of his Chelsea career and insisted Avram Grant's side were the better team for most of the game.

"It is a huge disappointment for all of us because for the biggest part of the game, we were the better side," Cech added.

"We were unlucky and I feel really sorry for everyone in the group. We deserved to win but ended up losing it.

"This is the worst feeling because this was the biggest final and when you lose it like that then, of course you are disappointed."
