Offiah, who was a prolific tryscorer for Widnes and Wigan and touched down 26 times in 33 appearances for Great Britain from 1988-94, enjoyed his greatest success while playing outside Australian Test centre Gene Miles.

The all-time great helped to persuade Chambers to take up Castleford's offer to have trials, and told BBC's Radio Five Live: "Dwain was adamant he wasn't going to rugby league. It's an interesting change of heart. If he can get an intelligent centre inside him, who knows what can happen?"

He added: "If anyone can do it, he can. It all depends on how much Dwain himself wants it.

"It's a whole new ball game but human beings are adaptable so it's definitely possible.

"It's a gamble and Bradford, Wigan and St Helens wouldn't do it but, with the way Cas are struggling, it's given them a boost.

"Rugby league is a basic, honest game where you can learn while you're playing.

"If you make a mistake, you get up and play the ball as long as you don't go into touch. There are more margins to use your natural talent."
