Challenge blow for Buderus

Danny Buderus has been ruled out of Leeds Rhinos' Carnegie World Club Challenge clash with Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday after scans revealed he will require an arthroscopy on his knee.

Buderus will have the operation on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks.

Rhinos head coach Brian McClennan said: "He suffered a tear to his knee cartilage in the game against Wakefield a fortnight ago and the opinion of the surgeon is to have the operation as soon as possible so he can begin rehabilitation straight away."

He added: "It is disappointing for Danny because he is so keen to make his mark at the club. However, that will be on hold now for a month.

"It is a routine operation and there was no point risking further damage. It would be unrealistic to expect him to battle on.

"We are fortunate that we have another world-class hooker in Matt Diskin, who has carried on where he left off last season.

"We are very confident in that area of our team going forward, not just for Sunday's game against Manly but the games in the following weeks as well."

McClennan has other injury problems to contend with.

Full-back Brent Webb and scrum-half Rob Burrow have yet to play a game this season, and second-rower Ali Lauititi missed last Friday's win at Hull KR. Full-back Lee Smith, second-rower Carl Ablett and prop Jamie Peacock all picked up injuries in that match.
