Chalmers critical of RFL
24 January 2007
The 30-year-old Warrington hard man was cleared to play at Huddersfield on Saturday after a three-man panel ruled he had no case to answer after being placed on report by referee Ashley Klein for an alleged high tackle in the Northern Union's defeat by the All Golds on Saturday.
"It's clear the RFL have little interest in player health and welfare if they allow such tackles to go unpunished," blasted New Zealand chairman Andrew Chalmers.
The Kiwis revealed that their representative on the three-man panel, former Test match referee Neville Kesha, was outvoted at the preliminary hearing, which meant the case never got to the disciplinary committee.
Morley, who had a poor disciplinary record in his six seasons with Australian club Sydney Roosters, missed the end of the Super League season after being handed a one-match ban for being sent off for a high tackle in Warrington's defeat at St Helens on September 7.
He was also twice put on report for alleged high tackles in matches against Bradford and Harlequins but each time was told he had no case to answer.
Morley achieved notoriety in 2003 when he was sent off after just 12 minutes of the opening Ashes Test for a swinging arm to the jaw of Australia prop Robbie Kearns. He was subsequently fined £2,000 but avoided suspension and played in the second Test a week later.
