Chambers cruises to heat victory

Dwain Chambers eased into the semi-finals of the men's 60metres at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia on Friday.

The 29-year-old Londoner, whose place in the team has caused controversy, looked comfortable as he cruised through to win his heat in 6.69 seconds.

He came home ahead of Nigeria's Isaac Uche (6.74), with the first two securing a place in the semi-finals.

Simeon Williamson also progressed from his heat (6.69sec), finishing well clear of Germany's Marius Broening and Dutchman Maarten Heisen.

Kelly Sotherton, a gold medal favourite in the pentathlon, made a winning start in the 60m hurdles but dropped two positions after an indifferent high jump display.

Last year's European silver medallist jumped 1.81m - only 991 points - and fell behind Tia Hellebaut and Anna Bogdanova.

Chris Tomlinson, with his first effort of 7.95m, automatically qualified for Sunday's long jump final.
