Champions slump to defeat

Reigning champions Sussex suffered a humbling three-day defeat against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in Division One of the LV County Championship.

Sussex were dismissed for just 206 this morning as they fell to an innings and 34-run loss. It was Sussex's first innings defeat for three years.

Chris Adams' side started the day needing 134 to make the opposition bat again, but the loss of Carl Hopkinson, Murray Goodwin and the captain himself before lunch reduced their chances further and James Anyon and Naqqash Tahir finished the second innings with four wickets each.

England seamer Matthew Hoggard took five wickets as Yorkshire cruised to a nine-wicket win over Durham at Headingley.

Hoggard's wickets came at a cost of just 32 runs with three of them coming in an explosive five-ball burst.

Durham started their second innings poorly and saw their opening five batsmen removed for just 16 runs.

Callum Thorp, Graham Onions and Steve Harmison had added 93 tail-end runs to ensure Yorkshire were forced to bat again, but the hosts reached their target of 30 with consummate ease.

Michael Brown's unbeaten 115 left Surrey facing a massive target as Hampshire closed in on a comprehensive victory at the Brit Oval.

The prolific Mark Ramprakash's unbeaten 107 was the one bright spot earlier in the day as the hosts were bowled out for 203 in their first innings, with Shane Warne taking five for 45.

Brown's stunning knock and John Crawley's 66 not out gave Surrey the daunting task of chasing down 503 but Jonathan Batty (48no) and Ramprakash (43) guided them to 105 for two at the close.
