Champions Trophy set for South Africa

South Africa is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy in September and October after being put forward to replace original hosts Pakistan when replacements Sri Lanka pulled out.

Cricket South Africa was put forward as the host when Sri Lanka confirmed they could not stand in as a replacement for Pakistan, which was originally due to host the tournament before being dropped on security grounds. The ICC Chief Executives' Committee will make the recommendation to the ICC board meeting on March 16, subject to agreement over financing the tournament.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said: "The meeting agreed we had to do everything possible to ensure the ICC Champions Trophy is a successful event."

The committee also recommended the ICC World Twenty20 be staged between April 30 and May 16 in West Indies.

The committee had met to establish whether Sri Lanka could host the tournament between September 24 and October 5 because of concern over weather conditions.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed it could not guarantee there would be no rain in Colombo during those dates.

Lorgat added: "On that basis it was felt that it would be too great a risk to stage the tournament in Colombo at a time of year when there was a distinct possibility of rain.

"This was especially relevant given the length of this year's ICC Champions Trophy has been reduced to 12 days - part of our desire to make it a short, sharp event - as on that basis there would be no room for reserve days.

"South Africa was a successful and excellent host of the ICC World Twenty20 at much the same time of year two years ago and the weather pattern in the area around Johannesburg in September and October is stable and ideal for cricket.

As for next year's ICC World Twenty20, the tournament will take place in St Lucia, Guyana, Barbados and St Kitts, with the latter island staging matches in the women's tournament that will take place at the same time.
