Chapple not getting carried away

The 33-year-old Lancashire seamer must have thought his chances of further top-level recognition had gone having limped out of his only one-day international appearance with an abdominal strain after just four overs against Ireland a year ago in Belfast.

And Chapple said: "I'm sure they're looking at more specialist Twenty20 sides, so maybe there will be a few players different to the 50-over version of the game. But it's only a 30-man squad at this stage, with 15 to cut from that - so let's wait and see. I prefer to just get on with things nowadays, and whatever happens happens."

He added: "I'll be giving 100% for the rest of my career for Lancashire - and whatever else that brings it brings. I don't intend to do too much dwelling on what could happen with international cricket, but obviously I'd love to play."

Chapple and several other surprising members of the squad will find out whether they are on the plane to South Africa for the inaugural tournament once England submit their final 15-man party on August 11.

There are two uncapped players in the squad - Sussex's Luke Wright and Essex captain Mark Pettini - while England's selectors have signalled their intent to also take notice of Twenty20 Cup performances.

With that in mind, they have recalled Darren Maddy and Jeremy Snape, who were both key factors in Leicestershire's dominance over the last few years, while Sussex seamer James Kirtley has also received another call.

Hard-hitting Lancashire batsman Mal Loye returns to the squad after narrowly missing out on the World Cup, while Somerset left-hander Marcus Trescothick returns to the squad for the first time in almost a year.

Trescothick returned home early from his last two England tours with a stress-related illness and will continue discussions with the selectors over the next month to determine whether he is ready to resume his international career in South Africa.

He said: "There can be no guarantees at this stage and I made that clear, but if I continue the progress I've made this summer I'll be very hopeful of taking part. The fact it's a relatively short trip is obviously appealing as a way of testing myself in an international environment abroad."
