Chinese officials claim terrorist arrests

Chinese officials claim they have broken up a "terrorist group" that had plotted to kidnap athletes during the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Spokesman for the Chinese ministry of public security, Wu Heping, told a press conference authorities had uncovered an "East Turkestan" group from China's western Xinjiang region which had planned to "launch terrorist attacks at the Beijing Olympics".

Mr Wu revealed 45 suspects had been detained for plotting to kidnap athletes, foreign journalists and other visitors to the Games, which begin on August 8.

He also revealed authorities had foiled plans to attack tourist hotels in Beijing and Shanghai, government buildings and military installations.

"At the end of last year an overseas East Turkestan terrorist group issued an order requesting its members to enter the country to be ready to launch terrorist attacks at the Beijing Olympics," the spokesman said.

"At the same time it asked them to closely observe hotels that receive foreigners, government buildings and military bases."

East Turkestan separatist groups have been linked with Islamist-inspired terrorism in the past.
