McGeechan's departure from the club he steered to glory in the Guinness Premiership and Heineken and Powergen Cups during his four seasons in charge was confirmed on Thursday.

England fly-half Cipriani acknowledges the major impact the 62-year-old Scot and Lions head coach has had on his development, saying: "I think he is one of the most experienced guys in rugby and I have learned a lot from Ian," he said.

"He has been invaluable to my progress in the last two or three seasons. He has a lot of wise words. We learned a lot from him.

"It was a difficult season at first but in the last 10-12 games of the season myself and the club were coming into form.

"I have been happy with the coaches at the club and I have learned loads."

Wasps have endured lean pickings this year, failing to lift any silverware for the first time in seven seasons.
