Clarke injury blow for England

Hooker Jon Clarke is out of the reckoning for England's World Cup squad after breaking his forearm in three places during Warrington's 46-8 defeat by Catalans in Perpignan on Saturday.

The 29-year-old suffered the break midway through the second half of the Wolves' season-ending engage Super League play-off tie at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium.

Hospital x-rays confirmed the player's worst fears and Clarke will undergo surgery to have a plate inserted on Tuesday, which will be followed by three months of recuperation.

Clarke was Great Britain's hooker for the last two Tests of last year's series against New Zealand and, having been in the stand-by squad for the mid-season international against France, was expected to be named on Monday in coach Tony Smith's train-on squad for the World Cup.

"It's not really sunk in yet," he said. "I think it will only hit me when they leave for the World Cup.

"It would have been my only chance of playing in the World Cup because I'll be too old when the next one comes around. I'll just have to try for the Tri-Nations series next year."

Clarke is the third player to be ruled out of England's potential World Cup squad following the loss of Bradford prop forward Sam Burgess and Wigan loose forward Sean O'Loughlin with shoulder injuries.
