The 26-year-old all-rounder was released by Derbyshire on Tuesday after a disappointing season which he began as the county's captain following a move from Surrey.

Clarke resigned as captain at Derbyshire a month ago citing poor form and the latest development completes a remarkable turn of events.

Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles said: "It is great to have someone of Rikki's quality joining the squad.

"I have played with him and I know he is the right kind of cricketer and character to bring into our dressing room.

"It is a great opportunity for Rikki to develop his cricket further with the Club as we continue to improve in all areas of cricket in the future."

Clarke played two Tests and 20 one-day internationals for England during his time at Surrey.
