The ECB have ceased negotiations with Stanford after it emerged he had been charged over a "massive fraud based on false promises" in the United States.

There have been calls for Clarke to resign over the body's links to Stanford, with Lord Marland, who last week aborted his challenge to Clarke in the election for the new ECB chairman, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: "In most other businesses some people would resign if they had been involved in such a fiasco as this."

Clarke, though, is standing his ground.

"I will not be resigning," he said in the Independent.

The chairman has already admitted getting into a business relationship with Stanford could be construed as a mistake, saying: "We had the best of intentions, so yes."

Stanford, three of his companies and two of his business associates have been charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for "orchestrating a fraudulent, multi-billion dollar investment scheme centring on an 8billion dollar CD (certificate of deposit) programme".

The controversial Texan agreed a deal with the ECB last summer for five one-off encounters, to be played annually each November, with an overall prize fund of US dollars 20million per match.
