Clarke stands firm as Aussies struggle

Stand-in captain Michael Clarke got Australia out of trouble in the second one-day international against New Zealand at the MCG on Friday.

Clarke fell two runs short of a well-deserved century and vice-captain Michael Hussey made an intelligent 75 to help Australia to 225 for five from their 50 overs.

The pair, Australia's on-field leaders in the absence of Ricky Ponting, shared a vital 133-run stand after the home side's top order - with the exception of Clarke - again failed to fire.

Clarke promoted himself to the top of the order to replace the injured Shaun Marsh and while far from a high-voltage innings, his contribution of 98 from 133 balls that included seven boundaries came at a time when his side most needed it.

It also helped deflect attention from the revelation Clarke and New South Wales team-mate Simon Katich got in a dressing room scuffle after Australia's victory over South Africa in the Sydney Test last month.

Fielding one of their most inexperienced batting line-ups in recent times, Australia struggled to 63 for three in the 18th over before Clarke and Hussey came to the rescue.

Showing the patience that comes through experience, the pair took few risks, preferring instead to work the gaps in the field.

But the Black Caps bowled without discipline and accuracy, giving them too many chances to find the rope.

Kyle Mills was miserly with the new ball, conceding 12 runs from six overs and taking the wicket of David Warner, while Iain O'Brien was strong at the death and removed Clarke and Hussey to deny Australia a final flurry.

However, Australia will be grateful they were able to reach a competitive total after an inauspicious beginning.
