Clinical Gunners add to Jol woes
16 January 2007
Getting a Champions League qualifier is what Jol has been asked to do this season by his board but the difference between them and "elite four" was exposed as their fierce rivals struck late at White Hart Lane.
"The difference between them and us was their clinical finishing," admitted Jol. "We could have scored a second goal after we went one up, at 1-1 and when we were 2-1 down."
He added: "It's a confidence thing as well - we didn't have the confidence to score but they did. When we get some more success, we will get more confidence."
Spurs have only one win in six Premier League games this season, with the poor start and the infamous meeting between club officials and Sevilla coach Juande Ramos adding to the uncertainty surrounding Jol's future.
"I can only listen to what (chairman) Daniel Levy is telling me," Jol added. "Provided we play good football and get the results, there is no problem.
"If you don't get the results, you have to analyse what is going wrong."
A first win over Arsenal since 1999 would have lifted the mood and Gareth Bale's 15th-minute free-kick gave them the perfect start.
He curled the set-piece behind the wall and beat Manuel Almunia at the near post, leaving the peroxide Spaniard furious with himself.
