Clinical Rhinos impress McClennan
16 January 2008
The defending champions drew level with leaders St Helens after a 54-12 rout of the Tigers, who look certain to finish the season with the wooden spoon after conceding a half-century of points for the fifth time this year.
"We did some good things," said McClennan. "There was a bit of a flat period in the third quarter, other than that I was pretty pleased with the players."
He added: "The discipline was good. The boys were getting very frustrated out there. There were hands on the ball, the 10 metres was non-existent at times and it was hard to get any momentum.
"We weren't really thinking about the league positions. It was at the back of our mind. We just wanted to perform well.
"We're getting confidence yet we know there is a whole lot more in us."
Castleford coach Terry Matterson felt the early sin-binning of Scott Moore was crucial to the outcome.
The Tigers were reduced to 12 men when French referee Thierry Alibert yellow-carded the St Helens loan player on the advice of touch judge James Child for a late tackle on Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield and they conceded tries in his absence to Ashley Gibson and Rob Burrow.
"It was a massive moment," said Matterson. "I'm still trying to work out why we got a man sent to the sin bin. I'm very frustrated with that. We really didn't get a chance.
"Leeds don't need a hand. You saw the kind of tries they score when they get the opportunity. I didn't think we did much wrong at 10-0 down but I was very disappointed with the second half."
